Overview
This introductory course examines business as a system of organizations, decisions, relationships, and exchanges that shape everyday life. Students survey management, marketing, accounting, finance, operations, entrepreneurship, and human resources through examples drawn from retail, services, online marketplaces, subscriptions, banking, and small enterprises.
Key topics include ownership structures, stakeholders, revenue and costs, profit and value creation, supply and demand, consumer behavior, competition, workplace roles, ethics, sustainability, and technology in commerce. Students develop foundational business vocabulary, interpret introductory evidence, evaluate trade-offs, communicate business ideas, and propose a basic value-creating business concept.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the core functional areas of business and explain their relationships within organizations.
- Explain how markets coordinate exchanges among consumers, businesses, governments, and other stakeholders.
- Analyze simple business scenarios using concepts of needs, wants, value, revenue, costs, competition, and consumer behavior.
- Identify ethical, social, environmental, and sustainability responsibilities associated with business decisions.
- Interpret introductory business evidence and use it to evaluate alternative courses of action.
- Communicate business ideas clearly in written, oral, and visual formats for specified audiences.
- Propose a basic business concept that creates value for customers and addresses operational and stakeholder considerations.
