Overview
This introductory course develops foundational Mandarin Chinese communication for students with little or no prior study. Students develop pronunciation, tone production, pinyin literacy, character recognition, basic handwriting, and high-frequency vocabulary through guided language practice.
Course content covers greetings, introductions, family, numbers, dates, time, locations, food, shopping, transportation, school, work, hobbies, and daily routines. Cultural study examines etiquette, forms of address, regional diversity, festivals, food traditions, family relationships, and appropriate conduct in common social settings. Learning activities include dialogues, role-play, listening practice, guided reading, character writing, practical simulations, and short cultural reflections. By completion, students will communicate in basic spoken and written Mandarin, recognize and write essential characters, apply culturally appropriate language in familiar situations, and compare selected Chinese cultural practices with those of their own communities.
Learning Outcomes
- Produce Mandarin pronunciation, tones, and pinyin accurately in familiar words and phrases.
- Recognize and write essential simplified Chinese characters using appropriate stroke order and basic orthographic conventions.
- Construct and interpret basic Mandarin exchanges concerning personal information, family, time, locations, food, transportation, study, work, hobbies, and daily routines.
- Demonstrate comprehension of short spoken and written Mandarin texts containing high-frequency vocabulary and structures.
- Apply culturally appropriate forms of address, etiquette, and interaction in common social and practical settings.
- Compare selected Chinese cultural practices with those of students' own communities using relevant language and cultural evidence.
- Synthesize foundational speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in an integrated practical communication task.
