Overview
This introductory course develops foundational Mandarin Chinese vocabulary, pronunciation, and phrase-level communication for students with little or no prior study. Instruction covers the pinyin system, initials and finals, the four tones, tone changes, greetings, introductions, numbers, dates, time, family, classroom language, locations, food, shopping, transportation, weather, and common daily activities.
Students develop high-frequency vocabulary, basic sentence patterns, measure words, personal pronouns, question forms, negation, and culturally appropriate expressions. Integrated practice in listening, speaking, recognition of simplified Chinese characters, guided handwriting, and typing supports practical communication in familiar contexts. The course emphasizes accurate pronunciation, comprehension of short exchanges, and effective use of Mandarin in everyday situations.
Learning Outcomes
- Produce familiar Mandarin words and phrases with accurate pinyin, initials, finals, tones, and common tone changes.
- Identify and use core vocabulary and basic sentence patterns in short spoken and written exchanges.
- Formulate and respond to basic personal and practical questions using appropriate pronouns, measure words, question forms, and negation.
- Interpret common simplified Chinese characters, signs, labels, and short practical messages.
- Construct brief spoken and written communications concerning personal information, time, locations, food, shopping, transportation, weather, and daily activities.
- Demonstrate culturally appropriate conventions in greetings, introductions, requests, and routine social interactions.
- Apply guided handwriting and typing conventions to produce familiar simplified Chinese characters and phrases.
