Overview
This interdisciplinary fundamentals course examines showering as a structured everyday process involving personal hygiene, safety, resource management, accessibility, and well-being. Students study preparation, water-temperature selection, cleansing sequence, hair and skin care, rinsing, drying, grooming, and post-shower sanitation.
The course introduces basic dermatological principles, product-label and ingredient awareness, allergy and sensitivity considerations, bathroom ergonomics, slip-and-fall prevention, electrical safety, ventilation, mold prevention, and environmentally responsible water and energy use. Through demonstrations, scenario analysis, reflective logs, and practical assessment, students compare shower systems, identify efficient routines, evaluate individual needs, and develop evidence-informed hygiene guidance.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a safe, effective, and orderly showering routine, including preparation, cleansing, rinsing, drying, grooming, and sanitation.
- Evaluate water temperature, cleansing products, and hair and skin care practices for suitability, safety, and individual sensitivity.
- Analyze bathroom environments to identify slip, electrical, ventilation, accessibility, and sanitation risks.
- Compare shower systems and routines using criteria of resource efficiency, safety, accessibility, and personal well-being.
- Develop an evidence-informed personal hygiene plan that minimizes unnecessary water and energy consumption.
- Recognize circumstances in which persistent skin, allergy, or hygiene concerns warrant professional medical advice.
- Communicate hygiene guidance respectfully and clearly across cultures, abilities, ages, and personal preferences.
