Overview
This course introduces the concepts, technologies, and analytical practices of geographic information systems. Students develop spatial thinking and examine geographic data models, coordinate reference systems, map projections, scale, accuracy, metadata, geocoding, and vector and raster representations.
Practical instruction develops proficiency in acquiring, organizing, editing, querying, symbolizing, and managing spatial datasets using professional or open-source GIS software. Students apply cartographic design principles, classification methods, labeling, map composition, and visual communication techniques to create accurate and accessible maps.
Core analytical work includes attribute and spatial queries, joins, selections, buffering, overlay, proximity analysis, network concepts, terrain analysis, raster analysis, and introductory geoprocessing workflows. Applications may include environmental resources, land use, hazards, transportation, public health, and community planning. Emphasis is placed on data documentation, file organization, quality control, and reproducible workflows.
Learning Outcomes
- Interpret spatial data structures, metadata, coordinate reference systems, scale, accuracy, and associated limitations.
- Select suitable projections, geographic data models, and vector or raster representations for defined analytical objectives.
- Create accurate, accessible, and appropriately classified maps using established cartographic design principles.
- Conduct basic attribute, spatial, vector, raster, terrain, proximity, and overlay analyses using GIS software.
- Evaluate the quality, suitability, uncertainty, and limitations of spatial datasets and analytical results.
- Organize, document, and manage spatial data and processing workflows to support quality control and reproducibility.
- Present geographic information and analytical findings effectively in written, visual, and oral formats.
