Differentiating Shapes by Sight


Overview

This foundational mathematics course develops visual discrimination, geometric language, and spatial reasoning through the recognition, comparison, construction, and decomposition of two- and three-dimensional shapes. It is designed for early learners and students requiring intensive preparation in visual geometry.

Students examine defining and non-defining attributes, including sides, vertices, angles, faces, edges, curved and flat surfaces, symmetry, orientation, position, scale, and composite structure. Topics include intuitive approaches to congruence and similarity, spatial relationships, transformations, and classification using progressively precise criteria.

Instruction integrates manipulatives, diagrams, real-world objects, pattern blocks, tangrams, dynamic geometry tools, and accessible visual representations. Students justify geometric reasoning verbally, visually, and through simple notation, with emphasis on recognizing shapes despite changes in size, colour, rotation, or context.

  • Identify and describe two- and three-dimensional shapes using accurate geometric vocabulary.
  • Classify figures according to defining and non-defining attributes, and justify classification decisions.
  • Compare figures for intuitive congruence and similarity across changes in size, orientation, colour, and context.
  • Construct, decompose, and recombine geometric figures using physical and digital representations.
  • Recognize and represent lines of symmetry, reflections, rotations, and changes in orientation.
  • Analyze spatial relationships involving position, direction, scale, and relative location.
  • Explain geometric reasoning through clear verbal descriptions, diagrams, models, and simple notation.
  • Synthesize evidence from sorting, construction, and visual analysis tasks in a cumulative geometry portfolio.
