Overview
This foundational mathematics course develops fluency with whole-number arithmetic and establishes preparation for subsequent work with fractions, decimals, measurement, and problem solving. Topics include number recognition and place value; comparison, ordering, and rounding; addition and subtraction strategies; multiplication concepts and facts; division as sharing and grouping; relationships among the four operations; estimation; mental-math techniques; numerical expressions; and evaluation of answer reasonableness.
Learning activities apply arithmetic to practical contexts involving money, time, quantities, classroom materials, and simple data. Students develop accurate calculation skills, communicate selected strategies using words, models, and equations, select appropriate operations for practical situations, estimate before calculating, identify and correct common errors, and present mathematical reasoning clearly.

- Interpret multiplication and division in terms of groups, sharing, quantities, and relationships among operations.

- Estimate numerical results and evaluate whether calculated answers are reasonable.
- Analyze common arithmetic errors and justify corrections using models, equations, or verbal explanations.
- Communicate mathematical reasoning clearly through appropriate notation, representations, and explanations.
