Overview
This introductory course develops conceptual understanding and practical fluency with rational numbers. Topics include fractions as parts of wholes and sets, points on number lines, quotients, proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, simplification, comparison, and operations involving fractions with like and unlike denominators.
Students apply decimal notation, place value, percentages, estimation, and rounding to contexts involving food, money, schedules, measurement, discounts, and sharing. Visual models, including fraction strips, area diagrams, and number lines, support the transition from concrete representations to symbolic methods. The course emphasizes selecting efficient calculation strategies, interpreting numerical information, solving multi-step problems, evaluating the reasonableness of results, and communicating the effects of numerical decisions in everyday contexts.
