Overview
This introductory course develops spatial reasoning and quantitative understanding through the study of geometry, measurement, classification, and pattern recognition. Students identify, name, describe, compare, compose, and decompose two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes using properties including sides, vertices, angles, faces, edges, and symmetry.
The course examines positional language, simple maps, standard and informal measurement units, estimation, comparison, scale reading, basic tables, perimeter, and area. Students select appropriate tools and units, measure and record length, mass, capacity, temperature, and time, and convert among familiar units where appropriate. Classification activities address sorting by explicit attributes and constructing classification rules, while pattern investigations develop the recognition, extension, representation, and explanation of visual and numerical relationships.
By completing practical investigations and mathematical problem-solving tasks, students communicate quantitative and spatial reasoning through diagrams, words, tables, and data. The course establishes foundational competencies for further study in mathematics, statistics, education, and related disciplines.
Learning Outcomes
- Classify two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects using explicit geometric attributes and defensible criteria.
- Describe and compare shapes using accurate mathematical language concerning dimensions, angles, symmetry, faces, edges, and vertices.
- Apply positional language, coordinate references, and simple maps to represent and interpret spatial relationships.
- Select and use appropriate measurement tools and standard or informal units to determine length, mass, capacity, temperature, time, perimeter, and area.
- Estimate, measure, compare, record, and communicate quantities with appropriate precision and units.
- Interpret scales, tables, diagrams, and other basic quantitative representations to solve practical measurement problems.
- Construct and interpret classification rules for objects and data based on one or more attributes.
- Recognize, extend, represent, and explain visual and numerical patterns using diagrams, words, and mathematical notation.
- Synthesize geometric and measurement concepts to justify solutions to practical problems using clear evidence and mathematical communication.
