Overview
This foundational mathematics course develops accurate and efficient addition and subtraction of large whole numbers. Students study place value through at least the hundred-thousands and millions, expanded and standard notation, comparison and ordering, estimation, mental-mathematics strategies, regrouping across multiple places, and multi-step numerical computation.
Instruction integrates base-ten models, number lines, place-value charts, area-based methods, equations, and written explanations. Applications include money, distances, populations, measurements, schedules, and everyday quantitative situations. Students learn to align numbers accurately, verify results through estimation and inverse operations, identify common errors, and select appropriate methods for varied problems.
Learning Outcomes
- Read and write whole numbers through at least the millions using standard and expanded notation.
- Explain the role of place value in comparing, ordering, adding, and subtracting larger whole numbers.
- Apply accurate regrouping procedures across multiple place values in addition and subtraction.
- Estimate sums and differences and evaluate the reasonableness of exact results.
- Select and use efficient mental, written, visual, and area-based methods for numerical computation.
- Diagnose and correct common errors in alignment, place value, regrouping, and calculation.
- Solve one-step and multi-step problems involving money, distance, population, measurement, schedules, and everyday contexts.
- Communicate mathematical reasoning using equations, models, complete explanations, and inverse-operation checks.
