Overview
This advanced course examines the generation, assessment, and interpretation of biological evidence. Students develop a rigorous understanding of operational definitions, variables and controls, sampling strategies, experimental, observational, and quasi-experimental designs, measurement scales, and the representation of biological constructs.
The course addresses validity, reliability, precision, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, biological variation, replication, pseudoreplication, uncertainty, error, calibration, and quality assurance and control. Laboratory and field measurement methods are considered alongside quantitative and qualitative data management, visualization, descriptive and inferential statistics, effect sizes, confidence intervals, correlation, causation, reproducibility, and transparent reporting.
Practical work requires students to develop protocols, critique published methods, analyze biological datasets, assess measurement quality, document procedures, and communicate conclusions without overstating claims. A complete evidence-based report integrates research questions, methods, data, uncertainty, and conclusions.
Learning Outcomes
- Define and operationalize biological constructs, variables, controls, and measurement scales for clearly specified research questions.
- Evaluate experimental, observational, and quasi-experimental designs in relation to sampling, replication, pseudoreplication, confounding, bias, and causal inference.
- Assess the validity, reliability, precision, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of biological measurements and protocols.
- Design and calibrate laboratory or field measurement procedures that address biological variation, uncertainty, and sources of error.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative biological data using appropriate descriptive and inferential methods, visualizations, effect sizes, and confidence intervals.
- Critique published methods and evidence by identifying limitations in measurement, sampling, analysis, reproducibility, and reporting.
- Synthesize research questions, protocols, data, quality-control procedures, uncertainty, and conclusions in a transparent evidence-based report.
- Justify biological interpretations and communicate findings with claims proportionate to the strength and limitations of the evidence.
