Overview

This project-based capstone integrates counting, measurement, numerical analysis, quality assurance, and professional reporting. Students investigate a real or simulated operational problem involving quantities, stock, specimens, production units, field observations, records, or instrument readings.

Students define project scope, stakeholders, constraints, risks, and success criteria; develop defensible counting and measurement protocols; collect or evaluate primary and secondary data; reconcile independent observations; quantify uncertainty and error; and investigate discrepancies, trends, and root causes.

The course emphasizes validity, reliability, bias control, repeatability, process controls, data integrity, ethical conduct, and complete audit trails from raw observations to final conclusions. Project outputs may include a charter, risk assessment, standard operating procedure, cleaned dataset, analytical workbook or code, dashboard, control-improvement proposal, and formal presentation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Design a counting and measurement protocol with explicit operational definitions, units, sampling procedures, calibration requirements, recording formats, and exception-handling rules.
  • Apply numerical and statistical methods to quantify uncertainty, error, repeatability, bias, and agreement between independent counts or measurements.
  • Evaluate the validity, reliability, feasibility, and ethical implications of data collection and analytical procedures.
  • Construct a complete, reproducible audit trail linking raw observations, data cleaning, calculations, analyses, and conclusions.
  • Diagnose discrepancies, trends, and root causes using appropriate numerical, graphical, and quality-assurance techniques.
  • Develop evidence-based recommendations for process control and operational improvement.
  • Synthesize project findings in a professional report, analytical deliverable, and oral presentation for defined stakeholders.
  • Defend methodological choices, numerical results, limitations, and recommendations using transparent and appropriately documented evidence.
