Overview

This course examines the principles, structures, and implementation techniques of modern operating systems. Topics include operating-system roles and architectures, system calls, user and kernel modes, processes and threads, process management, CPU scheduling, synchronization, interprocess communication, deadlock, virtual memory, file systems, storage management, input/output systems, virtualization, containers, and operating-system security.

Laboratory work develops practical competence with system-level diagnostic tools and concurrent programming environments. Students implement or modify operating-system components and complete a substantial systems project requiring the analysis, design, testing, and evaluation of operating-system mechanisms.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain core operating-system abstractions, architectures, and interfaces, including system calls and privilege modes.
  • Evaluate CPU scheduling algorithms using appropriate performance and workload criteria.
  • Design synchronized concurrent programs using mutexes, semaphores, monitors, and interprocess communication mechanisms.
  • Analyze race conditions, critical sections, deadlock scenarios, and resource-allocation strategies.
  • Compare virtual-memory, paging, segmentation, page-replacement, and memory-allocation techniques.
  • Describe file-system organization, storage-allocation strategies, journaling, permissions, and input/output management.
  • Use system-level diagnostic and tracing tools to investigate process, memory, storage, and performance behavior.
  • Implement or modify operating-system components and assess their correctness, efficiency, and security through laboratory projects.
