Overview
This project-based course examines choreography as an integrated artistic and production practice. Students develop an original work or substantial excerpt from initial concept through public presentation, engaging research, thematic development, movement generation, compositional structure, rehearsal planning, performer collaboration, and iterative revision.
The course addresses dramaturgy, production scheduling, rehearsal leadership, communication, documentation, budgeting, rights and permissions, venue requirements, stage management, lighting, sound, costume, props, projection, accessibility, audience engagement, publicity, and technical rehearsal processes. Students produce professional project documentation and evaluate their completed work through critical reflection, peer response, and audience feedback.
Learning Outcomes
- Articulate a coherent artistic concept supported by relevant research and dramaturgical reasoning.
- Generate, select, structure, and revise movement material using diverse choreographic methods.
- Develop practical proposals, rehearsal schedules, run sheets, cue sheets, floor plans, budgets, and program notes.
- Lead rehearsals responsibly through clear communication, inclusive collaboration, and effective time management.
- Collaborate with performers, designers, technicians, and production personnel to realize an integrated choreographic work.
- Integrate spatial, visual, auditory, technical, and accessibility considerations into a coherent production.
- Resolve artistic, logistical, and interpersonal problems using reflective and adaptive decision-making.
- Evaluate the final work using documented peer and audience feedback and formulate specific directions for future development.
- Apply sustainable, accessible, and ethically responsible methods to choreographic and production practice.
