Overview
This course examines the methods used to describe, compare, and interpret health at the population level. It integrates epidemiologic, demographic, statistical, environmental, and policy perspectives to investigate population structure, migration, fertility, mortality, morbidity, disability, life expectancy, burden of disease, health-adjusted life years, risk factors, social determinants, health systems, and health disparities.
Students develop competence in defining population health questions, selecting indicators and denominators, managing and assessing routine and survey data, comparing populations, quantifying inequalities, and interpreting contextual and compositional effects. Applied work addresses standardized rates, decomposition, population attributable measures, small-area analysis, spatial epidemiology, geospatial visualization, ecological inference, multilevel determinants, comparative risk assessment, intersectionality, and the limitations of population-level measurement.
The course emphasizes the translation of analytic findings into prevention strategies, health equity initiatives, and policy options. Students construct a population health profile, analyze a public dataset, visualize disparities, evaluate data quality and limitations, and prepare an evidence-based briefing for decision-makers.
