Overview
This course examines the foundational physical preparation required for ice hockey performance. Students study hockey-specific movement patterns, athletic stance and posture, acceleration and deceleration, skating-related strength demands, mobility, flexibility, balance, coordination, core stability, cardiovascular endurance, speed development, agility, and recovery principles.
Practical instruction develops safe and effective performance of foundational strength and conditioning exercises, including appropriate progressions, training modifications, warm-up and cool-down design, and responsible equipment use. Students apply principles of training frequency, intensity, volume, rest intervals, hydration, nutrition, sleep, and injury prevention to introductory individual conditioning plans.
Students monitor perceived exertion and basic performance indicators, identify common technique errors, connect physical qualities to hockey skills, and evaluate personal improvement through simple fitness measures.
Learning Outcomes
- Execute foundational strength, mobility, balance, speed, agility, and conditioning exercises using safe and technically appropriate methods.
- Apply principles of overload, progression, specificity, recovery, and training modification to introductory hockey conditioning programmes.
- Analyse the relationships between physical qualities and skating, acceleration, deceleration, balance, and other hockey performance demands.
- Identify common exercise technique errors and recommend appropriate corrective strategies or regressions.
- Design an introductory individual conditioning plan that reflects stated fitness goals, training status, available equipment, and recovery needs.
- Monitor perceived exertion and basic fitness indicators to evaluate personal improvement and adjust training decisions.
- Explain the roles of warm-up, cool-down, hydration, nutrition, sleep, and injury-prevention practices in athletic preparation.
