Overview
This course develops intermediate technical and tactical competencies for ice hockey participation and performance. Students refine skating stance, balance, forward and backward skating, starts, stops, edge control, transitions, crossovers, pivots, agility, puck protection, stickhandling, passing, receiving, and shooting mechanics. Introductory checking awareness is addressed in accordance with learner ability, equipment requirements, and applicable safety standards.
Tactical instruction covers spacing, support, communication, offensive-zone movement, defensive positioning, transition play, gap control, forechecking, backchecking, small-area games, and basic positional responsibilities. Students apply skills at increasing speed, make decisions under pressure, analyze simple game scenarios, and transfer isolated techniques to structured and game-based situations. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, respect for teammates and officials, equipment management, and safe participation.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate controlled forward and backward skating, starts, stops, transitions, pivots, crossovers, and edge-control techniques.
- Execute puck protection, stickhandling, passing, receiving, and shooting skills with increasing speed and accuracy.
- Select effective passing, movement, and puck-support options in response to pressure and changing game conditions.
- Maintain appropriate team spacing, positional responsibilities, and defensive shape during structured play.
- Apply introductory offensive and defensive principles, including forechecking, backchecking, gap control, and transition play.
- Analyze simple game scenarios and justify appropriate technical or tactical decisions.
- Communicate clearly with teammates and respond effectively to developing play.
- Practice and compete in accordance with safety protocols, equipment standards, sporting conduct, and respect for teammates and officials.
