Overview
This course develops applied competencies in the assessment of hockey performance and the promotion of safe training and playing environments. Students examine health screening, informed consent, baseline testing, anthropometric measurement, movement screening, flexibility, balance, strength, power, speed, agility, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, skating-related performance tests, and sport-specific observation.
Emphasis is placed on test validity, reliability, standardization, measurement error, data recording, confidentiality, normative data, and ethical interpretation. Safety content includes equipment inspection and fit, ice and facility hazards, environmental conditions, hydration, concussion recognition and response, emergency action planning, injury prevention, return-to-play principles, communication with qualified health professionals, and the defined scope of coach and student-practitioner practice. Students apply these principles to administer assessments safely, interpret findings appropriately, document results, identify modifiable risks, and recommend general risk-reduction strategies in accordance with institutional and governing-body policies.
Learning Outcomes
- Evaluate the validity, reliability, standardization requirements, and measurement error associated with selected hockey performance assessments.
- Design an assessment protocol aligned with specified performance goals, athlete characteristics, facility conditions, and safety requirements.
- Administer selected anthropometric, movement, flexibility, balance, strength, power, speed, agility, aerobic, anaerobic, and skating-related tests safely and consistently.
- Interpret assessment results using appropriate norms and limitations without making unsupported clinical or performance claims.
- Document screening findings, test procedures, results, confidentiality controls, and risk observations accurately and professionally.
- Identify modifiable injury risks associated with hockey equipment, technique, workload, facilities, environmental conditions, and athlete preparation.
- Recommend general risk-reduction strategies and appropriate referral or communication pathways within the limits of a coach or student practitioner.
- Respond appropriately to common hockey safety scenarios, including suspected concussion, acute injury, environmental hazards, and emergency events, while following institutional and governing-body policies.
