Overview
This advanced course examines postnatal recovery following gestational and medically assisted reproductive experiences, with emphasis on the physiological and psychosocial needs of male gestational patients. Students study postpartum anatomy and physiology, wound and tissue healing, endocrine transitions, lactation and alternative infant-feeding pathways, pelvic-floor rehabilitation, musculoskeletal recovery, nutrition, sleep, fatigue, pain management, mobility, sexual health, and return-to-work planning.
The course addresses hemorrhage, infection, thrombosis, cardiopulmonary symptoms, hypertensive disorders, impaired healing, mood disorders, dysphoria, and trauma responses. Students develop individualized, culturally responsive care plans; apply informed-consent, confidentiality, risk-screening, and escalation protocols; provide inclusive patient education; coordinate interprofessional referrals; interpret clinical evidence; and evaluate recovery through case-based documentation and reflective practice.
Learning Outcomes
- Assess postnatal recovery across biological, psychological, and social domains using structured clinical frameworks.
- Distinguish expected recovery patterns from urgent postnatal warning signs requiring escalation.
- Design staged rehabilitation and self-management plans addressing wound healing, mobility, pelvic-floor function, nutrition, sleep, fatigue, pain, and sexual health.
- Evaluate endocrine transitions, lactation, and alternative infant-feeding pathways in relation to patient goals and clinical needs.
- Apply risk-screening, informed-consent, confidentiality, and referral protocols in postnatal care.
- Communicate inclusive, culturally responsive education to patients, partners, and families.
- Interpret relevant clinical evidence to justify postnatal interventions and monitoring plans.
- Synthesize multidisciplinary information into accurate case documentation and evaluate recovery outcomes through reflective practice.
