Overview
This advanced course examines the analysis and interpretation of spatially referenced data using geographic information systems, statistical methods, and reproducible computational workflows. Students work with vector and raster data and investigate geographic patterns and processes through spatial data models, topology, coordinate systems, spatial joins, overlays, raster algebra, terrain and network analysis, spatial autocorrelation, point-pattern analysis, areal data analysis, interpolation, geostatistics, geographically weighted methods, spatial regression, clustering, scale, the modifiable areal unit problem, and uncertainty.
Practical work using GIS software and Python or R develops students’ ability to prepare and integrate complex spatial datasets, automate analytical procedures, validate outputs, evaluate assumptions, and communicate findings through maps, statistical summaries, technical reports, and presentations. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing spatial description from inference and making defensible recommendations based on spatial evidence.

- Apply and compare geospatial analytical techniques appropriate to specified research questions and data structures.
- Interpret spatial dependence, spatial heterogeneity, scale effects, and uncertainty in geographic data.
- Evaluate the assumptions, validity, and limitations of spatial models and analytical outputs.
- Construct reproducible geospatial workflows using GIS software and a programming environment such as Python or R.
- Synthesize spatial evidence into maps, statistical summaries, technical reports, and defensible recommendations.
