Advanced Reproductive Physiology


Overview

This advanced course examines the cellular, endocrine, anatomical, vascular, immune, and metabolic mechanisms governing male gestational physiology and their application to reproductive integration care. Topics include hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal regulation; male gestational endocrinology; pelvic and abdominal implantation biology; placentation; fetal development in biological males; gestational adaptations; fetal-parental interactions; male labor and surgical delivery; lactation and postpartum physiology; puberty, aging, and reproductive transitions; and genetic and epigenetic regulation.

Students analyze interactions among gestational, endocrine, cardiovascular, renal, immune, and metabolic systems; interpret physiological data and clinical biomarkers; explain regulatory feedback loops; distinguish normal physiological variation from pathology; evaluate medication effects and disease states; and assess evidence across molecular, systemic, and clinical domains. Case-based learning emphasizes mechanism-based reasoning, clinical interpretation, and accurate communication with clinical and non-specialist audiences.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal and gestational endocrine feedback systems in biological males.
  • Explain pelvic and abdominal implantation, placentation, fetal development, and fetal-parental physiological exchange.
  • Evaluate cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, immune, and vascular adaptations across male pregnancy.
  • Interpret clinical biomarkers, laboratory findings, and physiological data in relation to gestational status and disease.
  • Differentiate normal physiological variation from pathological gestational, endocrine, and perinatal states.
  • Assess genetic, epigenetic, medication-related, and environmental influences on male gestational physiology.
  • Synthesize mechanisms of male labor, surgical delivery, lactation, and postpartum recovery into clinically coherent care plans.
  • Communicate complex gestational physiology accurately to clinical and non-specialist audiences.
